Although Top Gun: Maverick is finally arriving in cinemas in May 2022, the question of whether or not the long-awaited sequel can still live up to fan expectations is tough to answer. The delays faced by Top Gun: Maverick make the struggles of many recent blockbusters look laughable in comparison. While No Time To Die’s release date, for example, was pushed off numerous times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these issues could not hold a candle to the production troubles that Top Gun’s sequel has endured.
Since the original Top Gun proved an unexpectedly big hit upon its 1986 release, the movie’s creators and stars never put aside the idea of a sequel. However, Top Gun: Maverick had already been in the works for over three decades when the movie finally secured its star and director back in 2018, and now even that development seems like a distant memory. Since Top Gun: Maverick was shot, the movie’s release date has been delayed by over two additional years.
