Rob Zombie's The Munsters is already causing a buzz, but it's not certain the adaptation can work without its missing characters. Many have criticized the garish colors of Zombie's family film. However, The Munstersmay suffer from more than just a garish color palette. The trailers for The Munsters reboot have revealed two essential Munster family members: Eddie and Marilyn. Zombie’s decision to make a Munsters prequel may succeed, but it does call into question: will Zombie’s prequel succeed without the classic family dynamic?
Many of The Munsters’punchlines come from the Munster children. Eddie, who is part vampire and part werewolf, gets into mischief. On the other hand, Lily's niece and Grandpa's granddaughter, Marilyn, is a gorgeous blonde who is considered «abnormal» and plain in the eyes of the Munster family as she's merely human. Many Munster episodes end with Marilyn bringing a man home who eventually runs away when he meets the family. The Munsters, who are oblivious to their strangeness, shrug it off and attribute it to poor Marilyn scaring away another man.

The Munsters' jokes are as dated as one would expect from a black-and-white sitcom from the '60s. Taking into consideration the generational gap, these jokes may not land with children in 2022. Eddie’s boys-will-be-boys mischief is harder to shrug off and center around the stereotype that little boys are monstrous. Additionally, Marilyn’s stories often center around the outdated idea that women only desire to bring a man home.
