The upcoming Thunderboltsmovie already faces the challenge of making do without William Hurt's Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who would have been the perfect leader for Marvel Comics' infamous team. Comprised of mostly reformed supervillains or morally gray heroes, Marvel Comics' long-running Thunderbolts is as prolific and unpredictable as the Avengers, with both leaders and members coming and going throughout the years. One iteration of the Thunderbolts was formed by General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who was the obvious choice for leading what is basically the MCU's version of the Suicide Squad. However, after actor William Hurt died at the age of 71 on March 13, 2022, it's unclear whether or not Ross is still one of the several existing MCU characters who could appear in Thunderbolts.
Thaddeus Ross is one of the few surviving MCU Phase 1 characters with actual ties to Marvel Comics' Thunderbolts. General Ross is the villain in The Incredible Hulk, but he is also the second person to be approached about the Avengers Initiative in a post-credits scene. In Captain America: Civil War, Ross presents the Sokovia Accords to the Avengers. Ross is last seen at Tony Stark's funeral in Avengers: Endgame. Although Ross is a rarely used MCU character, he is present in some of the Avengers' most crucial moments. In Marvel Comics, Ross not only turns into Red Hulk, he also forms the Thunderbolts as a response to the Phoenix War, a team that includes Venom, Deadpool, Punisher, Elektra, Ghost Rider, The Leader, and Mercy. After Avengers: Endgame, the MCU's Thunderbolts movie would be the perfect way to explore Ross' transformation into Red Hulk, continue the evolution of Professor Hulk, and introduce some long-awaited anti-heroes
