Activision has revealed the original Call of Duty: Warzone, which launched with 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is shutting down on 21st September 2023. The free-to-play Battle Royale game will no longer be playable in order to free up the team to focus on other Call of Duty content and the ongoing Warzone 2.0 — the latter isn't going anywhere. Any content you bought in the game is still usable in Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, and Vanguard.
«Please note that the Warzone Caldera shut down has no impact to current Warzone gameplay, inventory, or player progression in Al Mazrah or the other available maps, and we look forward to continuing with you in that new Warzone experience,» a Call of Duty blog post clarifies. It then goes on to thank the community and the developers that have worked on the Battle Royale title «for making Call of Duty: Warzone an amazing place to play together».
When Warzone 2 released last year, the original, standalone game was renamed Warzone: Caldera after its final jungle-themed map. Anyone who purchased skins, weapons, or any other cosmetic items will lose access to them unless they choose to use them in older Call of Duty games. Warzone 2 remains Activision's focus when it comes to its Battle Royale efforts, but it's safe to say the sequel didn't make anywhere near of a splash as the original did.
