Bungie had a wild start to the week and not in a good way.
The game developer on Tuesday said Destiny 2 was hit by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, which caused server overload issues that kicked players out of the game.
Problems started over the weekend and was finally acknowledged by Bungie late Tuesday night. This is an unusual move for Bungie since the company doesn't typically acknowledge DDoS attacks in public for game security reasons. "We want to thank our players for their patience as our teams work swiftly to ensure the integrity of the game and continue to implement our roadmap for future stability improvements," Bungie tweeted.
As IGN reports, the DDoS attacks come amid a push to fix a crafting glitch that allowed players to craft weapons with perks and frames from other weapons. One such weapon, the Ammit AR2, was craftable in such a way that it was able to shoot shotgun bullets at auto rifle speeds.
The bug deeply split the community. Some people, particularly PvP players, believe the glitch should've been shut down immediately while others, predominately PvE players, enjoyed the respite and used the glitch to have a little fun. Bungie sided with the latter, encouraging players to enjoy it while it lasted.
Bungie released a maintenance update this afternoon, which fixed the crafting glitch and made a few additional changes to the game. Weapons that were crafted with the glitch have returned to normal and attempting the glitch again boots players to the login screen. In terms of gameplay, things have returned to normal, though some players were still reporting error codes on Thursday afternoon.
