Resident Evil 4 Remake was shown off at the recent PlayStation State of Play, and there are several noticeable changes to the classic action/horror title seen from the trailer right out the gate. Many may have expected Resident Evil to take a different approach from the 2005 original game, and it seems that belief was well-founded. Instead, Capcom looks to be bringing this title in line with the recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, closer to its survival horror roots.
The original Resident Evil 4 pioneered the future of the Resident Evil franchise and established a finely tuned action horror game with excellent pacing and exciting set-pieces while still keeping the camp and horror-driven thrills the series is known for. Following the exploits of Leon Kennedy of Resident Evil 2 fame, the game saw this newly promoted U.S. Agent ordered by the President to rescue his daughter from a cult in a remote region in Europe. Leon was trained and battle-tested for several years between the Raccoon City incident and the events of Resident Evil 4. This skill improvement meant that suspension of disbelief wasn't an issue — Leon was more than capable of surviving situations, not unlike his first assignment. Many series purists took issue with this approach regardless, as many claimed that Resident Evil 4 was significantly less scary. Despite the fan concerns, the reception and sales for the title proved the direction was the shot in the arm Resident Evil needed.
