DC's Batman may be the DC Universe's Dark Knight and one of the smartest heroes in the pantheon, but even he can't save Gotham City from a terrible curse — or perhaps just rotten luck. Gotham is legendarily corrupt, and said corruption extends from the beat cops all the way up to elected officials. The highest elected official, the Mayor, never stays in office for long...because in a twisted tradition, Gotham City's mayors can't stop getting assassinated.
The first Mayor of Gotham City went unnamed in the comics, but the artist drew him to closely resemble Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia of New York City, the real-world location's best-known mayor (so much so that LaGuardia Airport is named after him). While he wasn't assassinated, most of his successors ended their careers in an early grave. The first Gotham mayor to shuffle off the mortal coil was Mayor Thorndyke, who was murdered in 1948 by the Made of Wood Killer. Unfortunately, his successors rarely lived to see the end of their terms.

Mayor Aubrey James, a friend of Thomas Wayne, was stabbed to death while in office. Mayor Marion Grange failed to protect the city during the Batman: No Man's Land story arc, and was assassinated by the Agents of Scratch shortly after. Grange was succeeded by Mayor Daniel Danforth Dickerson III, who was murdered by the Joker, and Mayor Julius Lieberman has the dubious honor to be the only Gotham Mayor ever killed by a Predator.
Out of the many mayors of Gotham City, an astounding eleven of them were assassinated in office, while many others died of natural causes or suffered unfortunate «accidents.» Even the films aren't safe from this bloody tradition:
