Warning — Spoilers for Batgirls #6 ahead!
When it comes to bravery, Batgirl and the rest of Gotham’s heroes have it in spades, often fighting against the very worst humanity has to offer. However, Batgirl has become so inured to fear over the years that it’s not just admirable, it’s heroic. And if the Green Lantern Corps lives up to its entry criteria, Barbara Gordon should be the next to bear the ring.
Batgirl’s ability to overcome fear is the key element here, as the main qualification used by the Green Lantern Corps in picking recruits is “the ability to overcome great fear.” This is quite literal, even to the point that the power rings use this exact phrase when they present themselves to new candidates. Given that Scarecrow’s fear toxin forces someone to confront their very worst nightmares, the fact that Barbara could be exposed to any dose and be completely unaffected would suggest that she meets all the criteria and then some.

In Batgirls #6 by Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Jorge Corona, and Sarah Stern, Barbara Gordon has been captured by a newly redesigned villain – Spellbinder, an artist with a penchant for mind control. When he attempts to subdue Barbara with his special strain of fear toxin, however, nothing happens. Instead of revealing her greatest fears, Barbara effortlessly takes him down, retorting “I’ve faced so much worse than any vision from your toxic gas will ever be…and as for fear, I thrive on overcoming it.”
This isn’t the first time the Bat-family has shown their compatibility with the rings of the Emotional Spectrum, either. Batman has already commanded a Green Lantern ring in Green Lantern Vol. #9 by Geoff Johns
