Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available for PC players, having exited early access after three years (and spending six years in development). It’s doing very well with over 470,000 peak concurrent players on Steam, but even before its full release, the epic role-playing game has sold quite well.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier spoke to Larian CEO Swen Vincke while revealing that over 2.5 million copies have been sold thus far. This allowed the project to “stay financially viable even as the scope expanded and the development dragged on.” However, the project faced multiple setbacks, from the pandemic closing down performance-capture studios to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which caused the closure of the St. Petersburg office.`
Starfield’s release date also posed some challenges since it was launching roughly within the same week as Baldur’s Gate 3. There was some worry that the latter would be delayed, but Vincke pushed the release forward.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is still due to release on September 6th on PS5, which puts it in direct competition with Bethesda’s space-faring RPG. Check out our feature comparing both titles and stay tuned for more details.
