In Baldur's Gate 3, clicking on a character portrait will give you a short line of dialogue, also known as a bark. These barks are short and sweet, just there to confirm that you are now controlling a new character. Each companion says something different, with The Dark Urge occasionally coming out with some pretty gruesome lines.
However, thanks to a bug I just spotted when reloading an old custom character, you might notice your Tav saying these lines too. When I went to open my inventory, my noble half-elf - who is very much not The Dark Urge - suddenly responded with, "All is ash and meat" - which is pretty unlike her. Sure enough, I kept clicking on her, and the lines wouldn't stop coming, as her more generic barks were instead replaced by references to death that should be exclusive to The Dark Urge.
I managed to replicate the bug long enough to record it, so check it out in action below. Here, you can hear a mix of Tav and Dark Urge barks.
In trying to replicate the bug to capture footage, I believe I've figured out how to trigger it consistently. This is because it wouldn't work if I loaded my Tav first, as this left her with her usual lines. I then reset the game, opened my Dark Urge character, and then switched over to Tav. Lo and behold, the bug was back. So, it seems that the glitch is caused by the game struggling to get rid of the Dark Urge character tag when toggling between characters, causing Tavs to come out with out-of-character barks.
If you don't want to be jump-scared like I was, just close the game before you switch from a Dark Urge save to a custom character. This means the Dark Urge tag shouldn't load in at all, preventing it from carrying over to another campaign.
It's not clear just how far-reaching the bug is, or if it just muddles up your character's barks. Alas, I'd already wrapped up the Bhaalist plot on this Tav save file, so I wasn't able to turn up the Orin fight and be gaslit into believing I've been a Bhaalist this whole time.
