Superhero teams today are all about getting bigger and more powerful, so fans might be shocked to learn that the original Avengers roster change actually downsized the team in both power and number of members. Marvel called this second Avengers roster «Cap's Kooky Quartet,» and they first gathered as an official group in Avengers #17, which was written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Don Heck.
Most Marvel fans are familiar with the origin of the Avengers and how they came together to stop Loki. The Asgardian God of Mischief was too much for any one hero to handle, so Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, Ant-Man, and Hulk worked together to stop him. Many associate Captain America with the original lineup, but it was only later that the group discovered Cap's frozen body and added him to the roster.

After over a dozen issues together, the group starts losing its focus. Thor returns to Asgard and the others start drifting apart, burned out from being on such a high-stakes team — one they never actually intended to form. Captain America puts out a call for other heroes to join. Hawkeye, who had previously opposed Iron Man, breaks into the mansion in a show of skill, looking to apply. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver also get in contact, intent on reinventing themselves as heroes after a stint as reluctant mutant terrorists alongside Magneto. Although the mutants are certainly powerful, they are nowhere near on the level of Thor and Hulk. And even with this influx of new blood, there were ultimately only four Avengers on this new roster, which was a significant reduction to the team's previous numbers.
