Assassin's Creed Mirage is taking the franchise back to its root, being an action-adventure game focused on the story of Basim's rise to master assassin. Players will be able to explore Baghdad and the Hidden Ones' stronghold of Alamut, with the core gameplay focusing on stealth, parkour, and assassinations. Assassin's Creed Mirage is a homage to the classic games, particularly AC1, but it also draws influence from the open-world RPGs.

Boudon referenced AC Mirage's setting following the walled cities of AC1, while also having to honor the future of the Hidden Ones/Assassins with Altair a few centuries afterMirage. Meanwhile, the next-to-last mainline action-adventure game, Assassin's Creed Unity, also provided Mirage with «some ingredients and tools.» AC Unity was built with parkour in mind, butMirage looked at how to modernize these features and provide them with the best quality possible.
