Since the very first Assassin's Creed title, the historical stories of characters like Altair, Ezio, and Eivor have always been met with a modern day companion. Up until Assassin's Creed 3, the story of Desmond Miles continued alongside his ancestors as they fought against the Templars. More recently, as the series has embraced more RPG elements, with Layla Hassan acting as the focal point of the modern narrative.
However, it seems that Assassin's Creed may be changing the way it approaches the modern day and meta storylines. First, it was reported along with a slew of other information on Assassin's Creed Mirage that the new game would not have any playable present day segments. This lead to some wondering where the series would go with its story centered around the Animus and Abstergo. Now, Assassin's Creed Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté, is sharing some information on what's next for the series' focus on the modern day.
Future Assassin's Creed Games May Be Shorter in Length
According to Côté, the modern day storylines will be moving to the hub of Assassin's Creed Infinity. As Assassin's Creed Infinity acts as a platform/launcher hub for the upcoming titles in the franchise, this means that fans may be saying goodbye to the playable segments of the modern day storylines, and characters like Desmond or Layla won't be appearing again. Côté even implied this may be the case for the future of Assassin's Creed, as he states people won't need to know «who Desmond and Layla are.»
