Apple's AR/VR Headset Could Be Coming Soon
Apple's AR/VR headset is one of the most hotly anticipated new products expected to arrive in the near future, but nailing down its release date has proved to be difficult. The uncertainty continues even as Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) approaches. If the rumored launch timelines are correct, Apple will be entering the world of virtual reality at the ideal time, given that Meta and other companies are working to make the technology mainstream.
Rumors about Apple creating a head-mounted augmented reality system were initially overly optimistic, predicting that the iPhone-maker might launch a product that looks like a regular pair of glasses. The name 'Apple Glass' has since become widely accepted, but leaks suggest that a slim and lightweight product is at least a few years away. Instead, a device that looks a bit more like current VR headsets is expected to arrive sooner.

In a report, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman shared some insights into what Apple might reveal about the upcoming headset at its developer conference. As is tradition, Apple will announce the next version of iOS at WWDC, and Gurman says that the beta release of iOS 16 will have several mentions of Apple's AR/VR headset and how it interacts with the iPhone. Apple might even give developers a glimpse of rOS (Reality Operating System), reportedly the core software of the headset. Additionally, Gurman speculates that Apple's mixed reality headset may launch during the iOS 16 cycle, which should release in September 2022 and continue until next fall.
