Comics creator and series executive producer Neil Gaiman says The Sandman's Merv Pumpkinhead casting announcement is coming soon. First appearing in Gaiman's 1989 Sandman collection of Preludes & Nocturnes issues, Mervyn «Merv» Pumpkinhead works as Dream's janitor and is an animated scarecrow with the head of a jack-o'-lantern. Merv is well-known for striking appearance resembling that of L. Frank Baum's Jack Pumpkinhead from the Oz books, frequently smoking a cigar and complaining about his essentially unnecessary job given Dream's ability to change the world of the Dreaming at any time.
Development on an adaptation of The Sandman has languished in hell for over 20 years, with various film iterations being eyed, including one with Joseph Gordon-Levitt starring and potentially directing, before all fell apart and led to the Netflix series. Tom Sturridge is leading the cast as Morpheus/Dream alongside Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Donna Preston as Despair, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, David Thewlis as Doctor Destiny and Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven. With much of the plot still unknown for Netflix's The Sandman, questions continue to arise amongst fans regarding what other characters may appear and Gaiman has now confirmed one fan-favorite is making his way to the screen.
