Before gifted and deep-voiced singer Luke Taylor made it to Hollywood on AmericanIdol season 20, he went viral on TikTok for singing sea shanties. Luke, a 20-year-old college student from Westchester, Pennsylvania, stunned host Ryan Seacrest and the judges, Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie, with his deep speaking and singing voice.
For his audition, Luke sang «Ring of Fire» by Johnny Cash. Luke Bryan sent Luke to Hollywood, but Katy was worried that he was too gimmicky and would not be able to seriously compete, so she said no. Lionel agreed that he did not think that Luke would«go all the way,» but he thought that Luke could be an interesting addition to Hollywood Week. He told Luke,«I say throw you in the soup,» and said yes. With two votes of yes, Luke earned his golden ticket to Hollywood.

This is not the first time that Luke has caught the attention of viewers. In an interview with Philadelphia Magazine, Luke revealed that he joined TikTok during the COVID-19 quarantine «as a joke» and a way to pass the time, never expecting anything to come of it. Luke posted videos of himself singing country songs, but soon found himself interested in the TikTok sea shanty singing trend. Sea shanties are traditional rhythmic songs about pirates, treasure, mermaids, and rum that sailors sung while they engaged in physical labor together. Most popular centuries ago, sea shanties made a comeback on the popular app, creating a craze called «ShantyTok.» Luke's viral TikTok status led to a call from American Idol asking him if he would be interesting in auditioning, and the rest is history.
