Just over two years since it was cancelled, Amazon is reviving its attempt to launch a Lord of the Rings MMO. This comes as Amazon Games and franchise rights holders Middle-earth Enterprises manage to come to a deal, with behind-the-scenes drama causing the last Lord of the Rings MMO to be scrapped in 2021.
The project is being led by Amazon and would be the third active MMO under its belt, joining Lost Ark and New World. Not much has been shared with the public so far, but the game will represent "the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings", perhaps retelling aspects of the original work in an MMO format.

Of the few details shared with us by Amazon, we know it will be an open-world MMO adventure game that draws upon both the original Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit for inspiration. The announcement specifically mentions that this MMO is "unrelated" to Amazon Prime's The Rings of Power, so don't go expecting many influences from the Second Age of Middle-earth.
The game doesn't even have a title yet, and is said to be in the early stages of production - so a long way off from being ready to be shown to the public. Amazon says it will be released for "PC and consoles", but can't get more specific than that right now. This likely means that there are no exclusivity arrangements right now, although it remains to be seen if that continues to be the case.
