A sneak peek of the latest The Amazing Race episode sees Phil Keoghan and various cast members discussing their feelings on returning to The Race. Season 33 was only three episodes deep when on February 28, 2020, production was halted. COVID-19 was just starting on its now well-known pandemic, and the pausing on production was thought of as an extreme safety measure. The racers were sent home and assumed they'd be back soon. But The Amazing Race would remain paused for 18 months before they would return.
The Amazing Race has faced some challenges, a scary lion here, a lost passport there, but nothing quite like the pandemic. Prior to the shutdown, the cast had traveled to London and Scotland. It was gearing up to be a great season, with astronomical wins and devastating eliminations. But behind the scenes coronavirus was beginning to take its toll.

After a life-changing nearly 19 months, a new sneak peek posted on E! shows the cast giving their thoughts on returning to the show. Some racers, like flight attendants Raquel Moore and Cayla Platt, were truly affected, «We've been through a lot in the year. To lose our job, we both had to move back home,» Raquel accounts. Other lives changed for the better as racer Dusty Harris's son Miles was born during the break. Many of the racers used the time off to better themselves and hone in on their skills. Cayla Platt learned how to drive stickshift in order to avoid the stickshift woes that plague The Amazing Race, only for the cars to have an automatic transmission.
