Pokemon rivals have gotten a lot friendlier over the years. We started out with Blue/Gary Oak, who was an actual bully. But now, our most recent companion in the mainline games is Hop, who's so non-threatening that he doesn't even understand type matchups. That's why fans are relieved to see that Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a return to form in more ways than one.
If you play as Rei, you get Akari as your rival - and she straight up despises you and everyone around her. However, unlike previous rivals, she has the bitter facial expressions to go with it - and players can't get enough of it.

When some previous rivals have simply been the gender-swapped version of your character in the past, you may be wondering why Rei isn't getting as much love as Akari. Well, it's simple - he's nowhere near as mean. There are actually subtle changes in how they emote and speak, with Akari's coming across a lot harsher.
For example, when Rei says "...was that a joke?", Akari instead goes for, "You can't be serious". On top of that, Rei just looks puzzled - whereas Akari is furious.
Across the board, Akari's facial expressions convey so much disdain for the fools she has to suffer. This is what we want with a rival: not a friend, but an enemy.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus is full of content, so this is far from the only discovery fans have made. Early on in the game players noticed that the lore has been elaborated in a way we never expected - Poke Balls don't shrink Pokemon.
