A Plague Tale: Requiem is the sequel to 2019's A Plague Tale: Innocence, which follows the story of Amicia and Hugo as they attempt to survive in a recreation of 14th century France where the black plague is being spread by hordes of ravenous rats. A Plague Tale: Innocence was praised for its strong narrative and tale of Amicia as she protects her brother throughout the first game. The trailer picks up a few months after the events of A Plague Tale: Innocence, showing Amicia, Hugo, their mother Beatrice and the young alchemist Lucas traveling to Provence, France, one of the few places seemingly untouched by the black plague.

For a short while, things are going well, and the trailer even shows Amicia and Hugo playing some games at what looks to be a fair. However, as many would expect, things don't remain light for long, and soon the black plague is brought to Provence, causing Amicia to flee with Hugo. This marks the main set up for A Plague Tale: Requiem's story, giving the player their reason to once again venture across the rat-infested lands of France.
