When it comes to indies, there are sometimes viral hits that capture fans’ attention—like Hades or Rogue Legacy 2. Sometimes, others are more obscure, and discovery is important. Game Pass helps with that. It doesn’t need to with Inside, Playdead’s indie hit, when it joins Xbox Game Pass on July 29, but it’s one that has flown under many radars nonetheless. Inside is truly something special among indie games.

Over on OpenCritic, Inside sits at a super comfortable 91 Top Critic Average, with a total of 94% of reviewers recommending it. 90+ in the industry is rare, and for context, only four video games in 2022 so far have a 90+ average. One of those is Elden Ring, which proved to be a major shake-up for how a developer can approach an open-world game.
Inside, nonetheless, has achieved similar critical acclaim, if for different reasons. Because of its indie and perhaps odd status, it hasn’t achieved the same level of commercial success, and that’s a shame.
