Video games are defined by their ability to let the player freely influence and control an aspect of the game they are playing, and for console games the bottleneck for this player freedom is the controller. Controller design has come a long way since the pointy corners of the NES, and many features continue to be improved upon to create better and more comfortable player control. It is no surprise then that many players like for this gateway into the games they play to be personalized to suit them.
For many years console manufactures like Xbox and PlayStation have produced special edition versions of their controllers. This is often done to celebrate the recent release of a particular game, or a currently ongoing event as with Xbox’s recent Pride Month controller.
Xbox Reveals New Controller
Xbox’s Design Lab takes this personalization one step further and allows players to design their own custom Xbox Wireless Controller to purchase using a wide selection of color options for each panel and button on the controller, along with some other personalized features, like rubberized grips and a laser engraved message. An Xbox fan on Reddit named Slaypire has taken this as an opportunity to reproduce a throw-back design that is reminiscent of the Xbox 360’s original white controller.
The Reddit user's post details all the colors that players should select for the different aspects of the controller in order to most closely resemble the Xbox 360 controller’s design. The finished product is very close to the 360 controller’s color scheme, although the newer Xbox controller design is much slicker than the Xbox 360’s.
