The X-Men have had various looks since their original debut, but their redesigns from artist Jamie McKelvie made a conscious effort to de-militarize their costumes. Tasked with redesigning the team's uniforms for the X-Men: Blue title, McKelvie gave the original five members their own distinctive look, inspired by athletic sportswear and workout gear.
Since making their debut in 1963, the X-Men have changed up their look more than once throughout the years. Originally wearing matching blue and gold uniforms, the original five members of Cyclops, Beast, Ice-Man, Angel and Jean Grey/Marvel Girl got their first redesign in X-Men #39, where Jean provides individualized costumes for her teammates. Ever since, the X-Men have changed their costumes to keep up with the times; perhaps most evident in the 2000 X-Men movie and its Matrix-inspired black leather jumpsuits. The evolution of the X-Men’s look can be seen best in team leader Cyclops' costumes, who went from his pouch-heavy Jim Lee look of the early '90s to the Frank Quitely leather jacket design of the new millennium.

The team got another overhaul in their costume design for 2017’s X-Men: Blue #1 by Cullen Bunn and Jorge Molina. The series continues the story of the time-displaced original X-Men from Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen’s All-New X-Men, which finds younger versions Cyclops, Jean, Beast, Angel and Iceman pulled out of the past and into the present day.
