Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap starts when you first arrive in the village as Lizard-Man. In this area, you will be on your own with rubbish gear, only one heart in your health bar, and no idea what to do next.

One of the first things you should do is explore, slaying any enemy you encounter to start gaining some gold coins. With them, you will be able to purchase better gear from any shop in the game. There are three types of equipment in Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap: swords, shields, and armors. Below you will learn where to get each armor in the game, how much they cost, and what they do.
After defeating the Meka Dragon, you will be stripped of your Legendary armor and transformed into the Lizard-Man. This new form comes with the Ivory Armor already in your inventory. It isn't a great option, and only adds a few defense points to your character.
Luckily, you can upgrade from the Ivory Armor as soon as you start gaining some coins. To get the Mithril Armor, go to the village shop — the one next to the windmill — and purchase it.
Once you get the Mouse-Man form, you can access the jungle area and purchase this armor from the shop that's there.
To get to the jungle, go west of the village and use the Mouse-Man's special ability to stick to any checkered block you find. Keep walking left until you reach the jungle, then drop down to open the door and get inside the shop.
If you have the coin, forget about purchasing the Shogun Lamellar Armor and go for the Crystal Armor instead.
