Tom Cruise's return to the role of Lt. Pete «Maverick» Mitchell for Top Gun: Maverick takes him back to one of the characters that launched his rise to stardom and is appropriately met with highly positive reviews. The sequel to Top Gun may come 36 years after the 1986 original movie, but that hasn't dampened enthusiasm for Cruise's return to the cockpit of the F-14 Tomcat.
While production on the sequel started back in 2010, the tragic death of returning director Tony Scott put the project on hold before Joseph Kosinski came in as director following his collaboration with Cruise on 2013's Oblivion. Production of Top Gun: Maverick saw significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seeing several release date changes from its original July 2019 to multiple different dates in 2020 and 2021 before finally settling on May 27, 2022.
