Stranger Things' Joe Keery recently explained why he did not think that his character, Steve Harrington, would survive season 1. The 80s-themed science-fiction horror show landed on Netflix in July 2016 and became an instant hit with audiences. The series follows a group of teenagers from a small town in Indiana as they combat forces from a malevolent parallel dimension known as the Upside Down after befriending a mysterious telepathic little girl. Stranger Things only gained in popularity following its release with season 4 being the most-watched television show on any streaming service this year.
As the show wears its 80s references on its sleeve, Steve is portrayed as an archetypal shallow high school bully boyfriend as seen in many popular teen movies of the decade. However, as the series progressed, Steve became an integral part of the group after facing death while fighting the monsters of the Upside Down. Season 2 saw him befriend Dustin Henderson (Gaten Materazzo) and continue that humorous relationship into season 4 as Steve developed a more selfless nature, risking his life to save others. Still, going into the most recent episodes, many were afraid Steve would die in the final two episodes and while he made it out alive, there's no telling what's in store for Stranger Things season 5. Keery, however, didn't even think his character would make it this far.
