Opening weekend numbers for Morbius may have fallen short of most other comic book adaptations as of late, but Sony has worked hard to make sure its Spider-Man universe will keep swinging strong regardless of Morbius’s box office performance. Many comic book film franchises depend on consistent financial success to dictate whether or not their characters’ stories will continue, but Sony has laid some pretty solid groundwork to ensure its extended universe will endure. Even if Morbius has an unremarkable run in theaters, the Living Vampire will likely continue to make appearances in future Sony projects alongside fellow Spiderverse characters for the foreseeable future.

While Morbius performed about as well as was predicted, that’s really because Sony kept its expectations low. That’s not exactly the goal of any studio hoping to create a larger cinematic universe connecting characters from different movies. Fortunately for Spider-Man and all his amazing friends, Sony’s plans don’t require Morbius do any of the heavy lifting.
