The Russo Brothers explain their treatment of Hulk in Avengers: Endgame. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were billed as the epic conclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga and gave many fan-favorite characters epic final moments. The Russo Brothers stepped behind the camera for the saga-capping two-parter after having previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Still, one character was underutilized in the eyes of many.
Hulk begins Avengers: Infinity War fighting Thanos and is quickly disposed of to showcase the villain's strength. Hulk is missing from most of the action, refusing to come out and help Banner. It was originally intended for the two characters to merge into Professor Hulk and show up towards the end of the battle of Wakanda but the Hulk scene was cut from Infinity War. Professor Hulk was later shown in Avengers: Endgame, with his transformation having happened off-screen in the five-year gap between the films. It seemed like, of all six original Avengers members, Hulk was the member of the team that the Russo Brothers had the most difficult time with.

As part of the WIRED autocomplete interview series, where the directing duo was asked many popular online questions, a question regarding Hulk inevitably came up. One that came up was their treatment of Hulk in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and the duo were asked why they seemed to hate Hulk. The Russo Brothers quickly laughed at the question but Joe Russo did answer honestly, stating that they didn't quite know what to do with the character:
