While unhappy viewers responded with petitions for the show to be saved, Disney Channel canceled Girl Meets World after season 3. Spanning most of the 1990s, the original series Boy Meets World was one of the most impactful sitcoms of its time, and a long-term cornerstone of the TGIF block. Characters like Cory (Ben Savage), Shawn (Rider Strong), and Topanga (Danielle Fishel) became pop culture icons, and it was no real surprise when Disney opted to resurrect Boy Meets World for a new generation in the midst of the TV revival craze.
Girl Meets World premiered on Disney Channel in 2014, and functioned as a sequel of sorts to its predecessor Boy Meets World. The original trio and other notable Boy Meets World characters appeared either regularly or occasionally as adults, while the crux of the reboot focused on Riley (Rowan Blanchard), the daughter of Corey and Topanga. Alongside Riley in the Girl Meets World cast was her own Shawn-esque best friend Maya (Sabrina Carpenter), while the possible Topanga to Riley's Cory came in the form of Lucas (Peyton Meyer), one of their classmates.

Unlike most Disney Channel shows, Girl Meets World drew positive critical acclaim. While it was still a tween-centered product, Girl Meets World managed to have crossover appeal, especially to those who grew up with Boy Meets World and now had families of their own. Older teens also tuned into the show in large numbers. While ratings had indeed dropped considerably from their peak by season 3, Girl Meets World still had a loyal audience.
