Disney’s interpretation of Darth Vader’s iconic helmet, the latest iteration of which can be seen in Obi-Wan Kenobi, has red eyes – but why? Darth Vader is one of the most iconic villains in pop culture, making his debut on the big screen back in 1977 in the film now known as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Since then, he’s appeared in numerous Star Wars properties, including the rest of the original trilogy, two others movies, and the animated TV series Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, among other media. His most recent appearance sees the return of Hayden Christensen to the iconic role in the Disney+ original series Obi-Wan Kenobi, which takes place 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith.
Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 3 witnessed the first reunion between Darth Vader and Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) since their legendary battle on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. Their most recent meeting culminated in a desperate lightsaber duel on the planet Mapuzo. Vader’s fury toward Obi-Wan was clear, as he used the Force to drag his old Master through a field of fire just so that Obi-Wan would feel the same pain as he once had. The red glow of his lightsaber and the orange glow of the flames was beautifully reflected in the eyes of Vader’s helmet, which in Obi-Wan Kenobi, as in other Disney Star Wars installments, have a noticeable red tint as opposed to black.
