Before its launch in 2020, 's developer CD Projekt Red made some tantalizing promises about a multiplayer DLC, but to the confusion of excited players, such an expansion was never added to the game. Reasonably, this came as quite the disappointment, as a co-op or even a PvP Night City could have completely freshened up and transformed the edgerunning experience. However, the developer ultimately had a good reason for going back on their word.
In general, isn't getting as much love as some players may have anticipated. CDPR announced that the upcoming expansion would be the game's first and last, and moving forward, the developer's focus will be shifting to other projects and IPs. Luckily, it should at least receive a proper send off, as is CDPR's biggest expansion to date, and trailers have teased a high-octane, spy-thriller story. But some frustration regarding a scrapped multiplayer DLC may might be lingering, nonetheless.

In an interview with , former coordinator and senior quest designer Philipp Weber revealed that 's multiplayer was canceled because of the game's infamous launch. Understandably, the many bugs, crashes, and last-gen compatibility issues that hindered the first-person experience became a priority for CD Projekt Red, and so the developer had to make the decision to postpone the production of such ventures until the more glaring gameplay problems were resolved. With bug fixes still ongoing two years later, though, it seems that 's multiplayer DLC never had a real chance to make it into development, and in time, it was abandoned altogether.
