Despite a number of potential suitors, Aloy doesn’t have a love interest in Horizon Forbidden West. This decision disappointed some fans, who were hoping that Horizon Zero Dawn’s sequel might offer opportunities for romance. However, a romantic partner just doesn’t fit into Aloy’s story.
Aloy begins her journey in Horizon Zero Dawnsearching for her mother. She learns she is a clone of a woman named Elisabet Sobeck, who’s been dead for a thousand years. The revitalized world Aloy currently inhabits exists because of Sobeck’s actions. Aloy’s desire to protect life on Earth is driven partly by her desire to feel connected to Elisabet Sobeck, her only sort of biological family. During Horizon Forbidden West’s prolonged opening, Aloy establishesher fiercely independent nature. While these qualities served Aloy well in Zero Dawn, Forbidden Westmakes it clear that Aloy needs allies to achieve her goals, and throughout the course of the game, Aloy learns to rely on others. While it seems like a romantic subplot could fit this theme, including a love interest would prove detrimental to the game.

Aloy needs friends before she’s ready to enter a romantic relationship. For Aloy’s entire childhood, the only person she had contact with was her adoptive father, Rost. As evidenced by her awkward nature, she doesn’t know how to build meaningful relationships with others. In Horizon Forbidden West's story, Aloy’s character changesas she overcomes these struggles and learns how to be part of a community.
