Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees its hero facing an unparalleled threat to his universe and others, which raises the question of where the Avengers were during the events of the film. After Avengers: Endgame, the MCU can once again focus its efforts on solo films that, while contributing to the larger story of the saga, have the main purpose of continuing to develop each hero. While the final battle against Thanos is still the highest-stakes moment in the saga, the MCU Phase 4 is already seeing world-ending events that would be worthy of the Avengers' intervention.
While Black Widow and Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings were more personal stories, Spider-Man: No Way Home had the Multiverse-collapse as one of its plotlines. However, an attack from Spider-Man's multiversal villains was not necessarily an Avengers level threat in the same way for the MCU as Avengers: Endgame. But with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness the heroes face off against a corrupted and stronger-than-ever Scarlet Witch as a villain ready to take over the Multiverse – and willing to kill anyone who stood in her way.

From the moment Scarlet Witch announces that she is going to attack Kamar-Taj, the absence of the Avengers in the film becomes difficult to be overlooked. However, it is possible to find some in-universe explanations as to why at least some of the other heroes did not show up to help Strange and where they were.
