The new voice actor set to play Wallace in the upcoming Wallace and Gromit film has been officially announced. The iconic duo made their debut in creator Nick Park's 1989 stop-motion short A Grand Day Out, which saw the Wensleydale-loving inventor and his silent yet resourceful canine traveling to the moon in an effort to restock on cheese. The popularity of the pair allowed them to appear in a further three shorts, The Wrong Trousers (1993), A Close Shave (1995), and A Matter of Loaf and Death (2008). The characters have also appeared in the television series Cracking Contraptions and World of Invention and were even granted their own feature film, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. It's since been announced that a new Wallace and Gromit short film will be released on Netflix in 2024, with Park once again helming the project.
The new short is set to be the first major installment in the Wallace and Gromit series since 2008's A Matter of Loaf and Death and will see Gromit defending his master from yet another one of his well-meaning but misguided inventions called a "smart-gnome." However, the future of Wallace and Gromit as a franchise was in doubt for a number of years among fans. Veteran actor Peter Sallis, who had remained the series' only regular actor as the voice of Wallace, retired from the role in 2010 due to his declining health before he passed away in 2017. And while the duo continued to appear in various TV advertisements and other cameo appearances, it was thought that another film was unlikely. However, the announcement of Wallace and Gromit's latest short film has confirmed that Park and animation studio Aardman are still hoping to continue the series with a new voice actor.
