has finally received an update from screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who also co-wrote the script for 2022’s David Harbour-led action comedy movie. This comes after more than a year since development on the sequel had first started.
During a recent interview, Casey and Miller teased what fans can expect from Violent Night 2, revealing that the long-awaited sequel will definitely expand the story’s scope.
“The Violent Night movies are not as big budget as the Sonic movies, but we still want this one to feel bigger than the first one,” Miller said (via Collider). “And you don’t want Santa just trapped in a mansion again.”
Casey promised that the sequel will include “more David Harbour,” seemingly teasing that the character’s origin story would be explored. He added, “Santa’s gonna take his shirt off even more in this one. We know what the people want.”
Violent Night was directed by Tommy Wirkola from a screenplay written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Besides the writing duo, Wirkola is also expected to direct the sequel. Joining Harbour were John Leguizamo (John Wick), Cam Gigandet (Without Remorse), Alex Hassell (Cowboy Bebop), Alexis Louder (The Tomorrow War), Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), and Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise).
During its theatrical run, the film garnered a worldwide gross of over $76 million at the box office against a reported budget of $20 million. In addition, it also earned positive reviews, with a 74% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
