Venerable actor Viola Davis is an action warrior in the trailer for The Woman King. Davis stars as General Nanisca, the leader of the Dahomey Amazons (also known as Agojie or Mino), the all-female regiment in the West African Kingdom of Dahomey. Originally based on a story by actor Maria Bello, the film is written by The Nightingale scribe Dana Stevens and Love & Basketball's Gina Prince-Bythewood who will also serve as the film's director. The Woman King centers on Nanisca who leads her army of women warriors against a European invasion that threatens their kingdom. Rounding out the cast is John Boyega, Sheila Atim, Lashana Lynch, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Thuso Mbedu.
Sony Pictures Entertainment recently released a new trailer for The Woman King which showcases Davis as an action warrior leading her army against an invasion of colonizers. The video features Boyega as King Ghezo as he contemplates a war that will encompass his kingdom inter-cut with scenes of fast and brutal combat. Check out the trailer below.

Numbering nearly six thousand at their height, the Dahomey warriors existed for nearly three hundred years until their defeat by the French in the Second Franco-Dahomean War at tail end of the 19th century. Their ferocity and legend inspired the creation of the all-female Dora Milaje in the Black Panther Marvel comic book series. The Underground Railroad star, Mbedu, will portray a young Dahomey recruit who will be taken under the wing of Nanisca.
