With the announcement of Venom 3 happening from Sony, it's time to deliver on a battle that has been anticipated by viewers since the first film: Venom vs. Spider-Man. Venom, created by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane, made his first live-action appearance in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 in 2007, played by actor Topher Grace. In that film, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man fought Grace's Eddie Brock at the end of that film, although many felt it was a half-hearted effort that didn't live up to the hype. Raimi himself has said that he didn't want to include Venom in the film, but was forced to by the studio, making the film feel overstuffed with villains (including Sandman and James Franco's Goblin villain). Since Venom was introduced in the comics, both he and Spider-Man have fought numerous times, becoming a fan-favorite rivalry.
In 2018, Sony released the first solo live-action film with the character, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes connected to the alien symbiote, becoming the anti-hero known as Venom. The film was not connected to the MCU, however, instead becoming a launching point for Sony's own cinematic Spider-Verse, as they currently own the rights to the library of characters from Marvel's Spider-Man comics. Sony has shared the rights of the main character, Spider-Man, with Marvel Studios in joint productions that feature the character in the MCU, who is played by actor Tom Holland. Holland has appeared in three solo Spider-Man films, as well as three other MCU films, including Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
