A Steam Deck update has unlocked the ability to tweak and save the handheld's performance settings for individual games.
The latest Steam Deck Client update(Opens in a new window) was released yesterday and includes a number of improvements and fixes. Top of the list, though, is the introduction of a new "per-game performance profiles" feature.
Valve already allows Steam Deck owners to change a variety of system performance settings (refresh rate, framerate limit, TDP, etc.) to allow games to look better and/or run more smoothly. However, until now those settings couldn't be saved for specific games, which meant potentially having to adjust them every time you switched from one game to another. Per-game performance profiles solves that problem by allowing a user to save the performance settings they choose as a profile associated with a specific title.
To enable the new feature, turn on the per game settings in the Performance tab. After that, a profile will be automatically created for the game running on the system and any edits you make to settings will be saved to that profile. Rinse and repeat for every game you run on the handheld. Valve allows you to toggle the per game settings on or off, making it really easy to revert to the system-wide settings and back again.
As part of this update, Valve also improved the performance when switching from offline to online mode, the interface is now scaled to virtual 1280-by-800 when connected to an external display, a "Stop Streaming" option has been added to the Power menu when hosting a Remote Play session, and a number of keyboard and controller improvements were made.
