Russia's attempt to take control of Ukraine's capital city Kyiv failed, and a teenager with a drone played a small, but potentially vital role in thwarting the Russian armed forces as they advanced.
As Yahoo News reports(Opens in a new window), 15-year-old Andriy Pokrasa and his father Stanislav spotted Russian armed forces passing their village on their way to Kyiv back in February. Rather than leaving for a safer location, the pair spent 10 days spying on the Russians using a drone.
The information recorded was then shared with the Ukrainian military, including photos captured by the drone. The military reviewed the information, pinpointed the locations, and trained artillery on the Russian convoy.
Following the artillery strikes, the drone revealed that at least 20 military vehicles, including fuel trucks, had been destroyed over the course of the 10 days of spying. After that, Ukrainian soldiers told the father and son to leave. The retreating Russian forces eventually ended up occupying their village, but by then, Andrily and his mother had fled to Poland while Stanislav stayed within Ukraine.
Andrily has now returned to Ukraine following the end of the school year and as Russia refocuses its forces on Donbas. Speaking about what he and his father did in February, Andrily said, "I was happy that I contributed, that I was able to do something. Not just sitting and waiting."
