NBC’s streaming platform Peacock has given a series order to the upcoming Twisted Metal TV show, according to Deadline.
The show, which will consist of half-hour episodes based on the PlayStation franchise is set to star Anthony Mackie from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Mackie will also produce the series.
Twisted Metal will be written by Michael Jonathan, who is most recently known for his work on the Netflix series Cobra Kai.
“Twisted Metal has been a global phenomenon for more than 25 years but it was the creative vision for this live-action adaptation, led by Michael Jonathan Smith, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, that blew us away. Also, Anthony Mackie starring made it undeniable!” said Lisa Katz, president of scripted content, NBCUniversal Television.
“This adrenaline-infused comedy series is in expert hands with our partners at Sony Pictures Television, Playstation Productions and Universal Television, and will be the perfect addition to Peacock as we continue to look for uniquely entertaining programs.”
Twisted Metal is the second TV series from PlayStation Productions, a studio formed by Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt its original game properties for film and TV.
The first TV series is HBO’s The Last of Us, which will star Game of Thrones actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie.
A Twisted Metal reboot is currently in development at Sony’s Firesprite studio, according to VGC sources. The reboot was initially in development at Lucid games, however, it’s unclear why Sony decided to change course with the project.
The game was initially intended to release at the same time as the Peacock show, however, that was prior to the change in developer.
