Tumblr is introducing ad-free browsing "from anywhere in the world"—for a price.
"Enjoy the same effervescent Tumblr you know and love (yes, including mobile) without the interruption of ads," Tumblr explained in a blog post.
The ad-free experience costs $4.99 per month, or $39.99 if you're willing to pay for a whole year in advance. It's the equivalent of four months for free, so worth it if you are a regular Tumblr user.
To sign up, simply navigate to Account Settings on desktop, select "Go Ad-Free," and choose between the $4.99 monthly or $39.99 yearly payment option. In the future, visit "Ad-Free Browsing" to manage your subscription, which automatically renews each month or year. After that, "you'll be able to enjoy your favorite blogs and posts without any pesky ads getting in the way."
This is strictly an opt-in perk; Tumblr won't be forcing anyone to sign up and you can continue to enjoy a free, ad-supported experience if you so wish.
In September last year, Tumblr opened its Post+ premium subscription option to all US users, allowing creators to charge $1.99, $3.99, $5.99, or $9.99 for access to content. In total, Tumblr currently hosts nearly 544 million blogs in 18 languages.
