The more of Trek to Yomi I see, the more I fall in love with its aesthetics. Coming from Devolver Digital and Flying Wild Hog, Yomi is a Kurosawa-inspired action game set in feudal Japan. And while we’ve already seen some striking and beautiful gameplay, I’ve been left wondering what it’s all about. Today, however, Devolver offered up some details. A Trek to Yomi story trailer was shown off during the earlier PlayStation State of Play, and once more I’m swept away by how it looks.
Trek to Yomi is a visually stunning game, isn’t it? Gameplay-wise, it appears you move from left to right on a 2D plane. Enemies can come at you from the front or behind, and you can move to meet their approach. As a samurai, you use a katana to cut down foes real and supernatural, all the while hunting down a villainous samurai warrior. I especially like the shadow effect on the apparent antagonist, creating the appearance of a skull. I have a feeling he won’t be easy to take down.
“As a vow to his dying Master, a young swordsman is sworn to protect his town and the people he loves against all threats,” reads the game’s story description. “Faced with tragedy and bound to duty, the lone samurai must voyage beyond life and death to confront himself and decide his path forward.”
So far, Trek to Yomi is looking good, and the story trailer leaves me intrigued. It also includes more gameplay, showing off well-timed counters and executions. You can chop, stab, and leave enemies without their heads. Yes, the game is looking pretty violent, so those with weak stomachs may want to take a pass. Granted, it’s not too gory, and it’s in black and white. Still, that’s just… a lot of blood.
