Marvel is big money both in American theaters and at the international box office, but Tom Cruise is giving Earth's Mightiest Heroes a run for their money. Top Gun: Maverick has now passed The Avengers at the domestic box office as it approaches a $624 million total (via Variety).
Top Gun: Maverick has grossed $623.8 million so far in the United States and Canada, putting it ahead of The Avengers, which holds a $623.3 million total. That puts it just behind Jurassic World ($653 million) and Titanic ($659 million), though Variety notes that it's still within reason that Maverick could pass those films as well.
Internationally, Maverick is still doing well, though it isn't ranked quite so high. At $1.24 billion globally, the movie is still just out of the top 20, ranked 21st behind The Fate of the Furious. Maverick is also the highest-grossing movie ever for both Tom Cruise and Paramount.
Top Gun: Maverick was released 36 years after the original film and is set in the modern day. Maverick, now a test pilot, returns to the Top Gun school he came from, to train a new generation of pilots, including the son of his deceased friend, Goose.
GameSpot editor Chris E. Hayner called Top Gun: Maverick «a masterclass on how to make a sequel to a movie everyone loved» and a «worthy revival of the franchise.»
