TikTok is releasing new features designed to give creators more credit for their work.
"With the launch of these crediting tools," the company says(Opens in a new window) in a blog post about the new features, "creators will have the ability to directly tag, mention, and credit a video in their description, showcasing the diverse voices on the platform and the strength of our community."
TikTok says it's "also adding more user prompts to credit throughout the posting process along with an educational pop-up that encourages and explains the importance of crediting." All of which is to say it's making like an English teacher and discouraging users from plagiarizing.
The process of crediting other creators isn't exactly straightforward, however, with TikTok saying the feature will be located behind a new "video" icon. Users then have to select a video they have "liked, favorited, posted, or that has used the same sound" to mention in their new post.
"It's important to see a culture of credit take shape across the digital landscape and to support underrepresented creators in being properly credited and celebrated for their work," TikTok says.
These features are expected to reach additional users "over the next few weeks."
The move comes about a year after Black creators went on strike(Opens in a new window) to protest the lack of credit they received for choreographing some of the app's most popular dances. Black creators have also reported(Opens in a new window) not receiving the same type of money-making deals as their white counterparts.
