In an attempt to fight back against spam and inappropriate messages, TikTok is now testing a dislike button for comments. Like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other popular social apps, TikTok is home to all kinds of different users. Some people use the app to create videos and grow their influencer career, while others use TikTok to relax and watch funny videos. But there are also people who use TikTok in more selfish ways. From uploading hurtful videos to bombarding other people's clips with mean comments, TikTok has its fair share of bad eggs.
Like YouTube, TikTok's comments section is where a lot of this behavior is cultivated. If someone's posting comments with harmful or dangerous messages, TikTok has built-in reporting tools to flag those comments and direct them to a TikTok moderator. It's a good system for users filling the comments section with bullying, hate speech, etc. But those aren't the only comments that can make TikTok less enjoyable. TikTok also has a spam problem. Whether it be phishing attacks or users flooding a video's comments with TikTok's infamous brownie recipe, knowing how to deal with these comments isn't quite as clear.

But that's something TikTok hopes to change with a new dislike button for comments. In a blog post published on April 13, 2022, TikTok confirmed that it's «started testing a way to let individuals identify comments they believe to be irrelevant or inappropriate.» If someone sees a comment that doesn't contribute anything meaningful to the conversation, that's where the new dislike button is used.
