Those MTG Cards Found In Landfill Included Secret Lair And 30th Anniversary Edition

Over the weekend, someone spotted six pallets of Magic: The Gathering cards unceremoniously dumped at a Texas landfill. When the pics hit Reddit, some Magic fans did the math and calculated there were approximately 1,700 unopened display boxes worth at least $260,000 at retail. However, they could have been worth more, depending on what those boxes were.

A few days later, the original Reddit poster returned with some bad news. "The cards were gone," said LATIN0. Worse, they weren't "allowed to take anything from the landfill" and left the majority of the cards to be buried with the next truck load of trash.

But they did take several more pictures of what was left when the dust settled, so we at least have a better idea of what was lost. In a gallery on Imgur, we can see most of the cards appeared to be from the recent Unfinity set--a fine set, but not the most impactful or valuable Magic set in history. Things get slightly more heartbreaking when we see a few torn Secret Lair boxes, and they become absolutely devastating when we see the wrapper of Magic's 30th Anniversary set, boxes of which sold for at least $1,000 each. That would greatly inflate the total value of the haul if someone had thought to bring a pickup truck to cart all six palettes away.

"I do regret not taking a box or two, again we're not allowed to. I didn't," wrote LATIN0. "I'm not mad I didn't take any boxes but I wish I knew what they were worth when I took a photo and seeing them on the ground. I only know of MTG because of Reddit posts I've seen over the years."
