Dan Fogelman, creator of the NBC series This Is Us, reveals some of the not-so-great alternate titles originally considered for the hit drama. Now well into season 6, This Is Us originally premiered on NBC in 2016 to great acclaim. The show is a multi-generational story that follows parents Jack and Rebecca Pearson, and their three children, Kevin, Kate, and Randall through several different timelines. This Is Us has stood as one of network television's biggest shows during its run, though it has been confirmed that season 6 will be its very last.
The cast of This Is Us includes Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore as Jack and Rebecca respectively, and Justin Hartley as Kevin, Chrissy Metz as Kate, and Sterling K. Brown as Randall. Several other regular cast members are also featured throughout the series due to associations with every individual family member, but they are all tethered to the main Pearson family. This Is Us is partially known for its ability to pull on the viewers' heartstrings while moving the plot forward for the ever-evolving Pearson family.

In a recent THR feature covering This Is Us' origins and success, Fogelman shares the lengthy process that went into titling the series. He first began with 36 as a placeholder, but "then I hated it." Fogelman knew how important it is to firmly stick to a title, and he says that he began fighting for This Is Us to be the name of the series once production began. However, he recalls that there was some pushback against that title, and at one point there was a movement for the series to be called Happy Birthday.
