Sales of PlayStation 5 consoles have reached 19.3 million, but Sony is aiming to sell another 18 million by the end of this financial year.
As Engadget reports, Sony had disappointing PS5 sales in the last quarter, managing to shift just 2 million consoles compared to 3.3 million in the same quarter last year. However, Sony says that wasn't due to a lack of demand, it simply couldn't produce enough consoles due to chip shortages.
If, like me, you're still waiting to buy a PS5 at its retail price, Sony has some encouraging news. As Reuters reports, the company is aiming to almost double the installed base during this financial year by producing and selling a further 18 million consoles. Of course, how achievable that is depends on the supply chain and the impact China's zero-Covid policy has on manufacturing during the rest of 2022.
Even with console supply limited, Sony managed to sell 70.5 million PS4 and PS5 games during the last quarter, up from 61.4 million a year ago. Also encouraging for the company is that fact 14.5 million of those sales were first-party titles. Sony's Game & Network Services (GSN) division, which handles all of the company's online services, saw revenue increase to $5.1 billion for the quarter.
With game sales increasing, first-party titles proving very popular, and online service revenue up, it's clear to see why Sony is putting so much focus on console production. Meanwhile, Microsoft is rumored to be working on an Xbox streaming stick to offer Xbox games without need of a console.
