This $500 Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Phone Isn't Coming To The U.S.
The Nubia Z40S Pro smartphone has launched in China at just 3,399 yuan ($500), making it one of the most affordable devices rocking the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. The Z40S Pro is the mid-year refresh to the original Z40 Pro, which was launched earlier this year. The older device is powered by the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and is also priced at 3,399 yuan. Its claim to fame is a MagSafe-like magnetic charging feature that allows users to securely attach a wireless charger to the back of the device like the iPhone 12 and 13.
Nubia Technologies started life in 2012 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chinese telecom giant ZTE before it was spun off as an independent company a few years later. It has a gaming sub-brand called Red Magic that recently unveiled its first gaming smartphone with an under-display selfie-camera. Called the Red Magic 7 Pro, it is one of the best gaming smartphones in the market and competes with the likes of the ROG Phone 6 from Asus and the Black Shark 5 from Xiaomi. Nubia also makes regular Android flagships that are fairly well-received in China, but most of them never make their way to global markets, including the U.S.

The Nubia Z40S Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, and offers up to a massive 18GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 3.1 storage. It also comes with a custom cooling solution, including a large vapor chamber, a graphene sheet and a thermal paste with synthetic diamonds for high thermal conductivity. The other critical specs include a 6.67-inch FHD+ (2400 x 1080) 144Hz 10-bit AMOLED display with a 480Hz touch sampling rate, 100-percent DCI-P3 coverage and a peak brightness of 1,000 nits.
