The School for Good and Evil saw a resurgence in popularity with the first officially released footage from the adaptation appearing in the Netflix 2022 movie preview trailer. The adaptation will be based on Soman Chainani’s hit middle grade six-book series of the same name, featuring a fantasy adventure that was described by NPR as “a kids’ book series for the fake news era.” The core behind the series stemmed from Chainani’s desire to give kids an alternative to Disney’s version of fairy tales, and the movie looks set to deliver on that pledge.
The School for Good and Evil itself has been down a winding road, with Universal Pictures buying the rights to the series as soon as the first book got published. Since then, the adaptation has been in the works for almost 11 years. Soman Chainani was hired to write the screenplay which was ultimately finished in July 2015, as per an announcement Chainani made himself. The adaptation reportedly suffered in developmental hell in the years since, until a new team including Laura Solee and David Magee were hired when Netflix purchased the rights to the adaptation.

Since then, there have been several announcements from the upcoming Netflix movie, as filmmakers continued to make several robust additions to their ever-growing cast. By January 2021, the filming had reportedly begun and had wrapped up in around 4 months. It’s extremely good news for the fans of the series since there’s a lot of potential for The School for Good and Evil to become a breakout success for Netflix especially when there’s a lot more source material to draw from as well.
